What do you like more, the Ford Escape or the GMC Terrain?
They look about the same in price, size, and basic style. The GMC might have more standard features. But Ford quality might be better overall.

What is wrong with my 1997 Ford Expediton?
I have a 1997 Ford Expedition with about 93,000 miles and it won't start. I had to get a jump on Friday afternoon and it was fine. I started it up on Saturday but didn't drive anywhere and now today, Sunday nothing. I tried to get a jump but it did not work this time. My remote won't even work to unlock the doors. The radio kicks on but each time I've tried to start it and the headlights are not coming on. The daytime running lights usually pop on as soon as I put the key in the ignition. Could this just possible be a bad battery. THere is some corrosion ont he battery terminals but it is not excessive. The first jump took but the second one won't. I am unsure how long the battery has been in the car because I have not had it that long. Funds are tight and I am hoping that this won't be an expensive fix. Any suggestions out there. To be honest, it sounds like the battery. Any amount of corrosion on the battery cables will mess it up. Clean them off very good and try jumping again and seeing how long it will last. if it doesn't, then get a new battery.

How many miles will a 2003 Ford Focus last for?
I'm looking into buying a 2003 Ford Focus with 93K miles. It appears to have pretty good mpg and safety ratings, but I can't find its average lifespan in terms of miles. I'm a junior in high school and I need this car to last me until I graduate college with an average of 6K miles driven per year. Should the two batteries on my ford diesel be showing the same voltage?
I have a 1990 Ford F250 7.3 diesel with two 65S Everstart batteries. One battery is showing about 13.5 volts when running. The one by the voltage regulator is showing about 14.5 and when I rev the engine it goes up to 17 volts. Is this the way it should be? The alternator and the voltage regulator are brand new put them on yesterday.Should the two batteries on my ford diesel be showing the same voltage?These batteries are wired in parallel they should be exactly the same voltage! If they are not that means that means that you have a resistance at one of the terminals or you have excessive voltage drop in one of the cables! You need to check the terminals and your grounds! What in the world is tronary talking about? 13.5 volts is a fully charged battery? If it has a separate regulator 17 volts is OK? WTF??? A fully charged battery (with no surface charge) is each cell produces 2.1 volts times 6 cells=12.6 volts! Ideal charging system voltage @2000 RPM (the RPM that it should be checked at) is 13.8-14.6 volts! You cannot take a reading at idle, alternator output is measured at 2,000 RPM (if you read voltage at idle it WILL be inaccurate Did you check anything that i wrote yesterday?Should the two batteries on my ford diesel be showing the same voltage?
Do you have a battery isolator ? If so check the connections for corrosion . If not then you need one. The batteries should read 14.5 volts at idle. The 13.5 reading is a fully charged battery. If you did not clean the battery terminals and posts do so. I have an 88 Ford Bronco 2 4x4 2.9L V6 with a rebuild engine and transmission. This problem started in the summer while on the highway I notice that at first the gas pedle felt loose then the engine light went on and I lost accleration. At first I when I tried to get it to start it would turn over but would die. But it started up the next day and didn't have a problem until it happened again. I replaced the ignition modular, gave it a tune up, replaced the battery, and replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank. The problem still persists and to make it worst its intermittent which makes it difficult to find.
I was wondering if it could be the computer for the truck and how I could troubleshoot it.

YOU NEED TO CHECK THE IGNITION CONNECTION ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE BLACK CONNECTORS GETS HOT AND LOSES CONTACTS.
My first car was a 86 Bronco II I got from my older brother. Try replacing the emergency fuel cut-off switch. We had to replace mine twice (before I got it). For some reason alot of them mess up. They trip when they shouldn't. We kept thinking it was the fuel pump until a friend of ours told us that he had the same problem a few years before. Timing has nothing to do with an intermittent stall problem.
I would guess a fuel cut off switch would stay off till it was reset.
A "mechanic" would have a tough time with an intermittent problem. Thy get $60 / hr. in my neighborhood.

I don't know how your temps. are as I don't know your location but will try a little guesstimating here. The clue was summer, I would offer you are experiencing "vapor lock",all the symptoms point that way. It is caused from gasoline overheating and vaporizing in the fuel line. Trace your fuel line from the carb.,I am guessing you have one on an 88, and see if it comes near the exhaust manifold at any point. If so you need to put some metal cooling fins, two or three, in the area. Metal paper clamps or aluminum clothes pins or some such. Something to remove the heat from the fuel line.
When it stalls immediately put some water on the fuel line and it should start as soon as you cool it .. Get a squirt bottle, like you use for window cleaner, and put water in it.

Or it could be they fuel pump relay. If they start going bad they heat up and stop working. Then cool down and work again. Get they relay replaced. It's cheap and it's probably 20 yrs old anyway. Replace the relay 1st. Then get the switch checked if the relay didn't fix the problem

Im gonna say you have not ckd to see if all the ground for your sensors or the ecm got put back where they belong or they could be loose.another thing a open or intermitent throttle positionig switch could be causing your problem.
why dont you try startin g it up and then move your harness around by the module by the distributer or the throttle switch.if it makes it quit ck your connecters.another thing that will make it quit is if your oxygen sensor wiring is making contact with the exhaust,if its just intermitent its good to ck that.
brain failure on these is seldom,usually if it fails its due to wiring exposed causing it to short out or if it someone welded something on youir truck without disconecting it first

I got a quote of $450 and figured that is outrageous. It's a 1998 Ford Expedition 4x4, 5.4. I would change them myself but way to difficult. try to go other mechanic and see what is up. I always compare to differernt mechanic and got good deals. My is the tahoe and got it for $250 for them to replace the spark plugs. If you know a little bit about cars you can do it yourself, just need about a foot long of 3/8" or 1/2" extensions and about 1/2 a day to do it, The hardest plugs are the ones towards the back and you need to disconect the fuel injector lines to maneuver your hands and the tools. The spark plugs themselves are no more than $50. I would just spend some money on the tools I need (about another $50) and do it myself.

The spark plugs themselves are no more than $50. I would just spend some money on the tools I need (about another $50) and do it myself.

Roll bars are tricky to make and an un qualified person should not attempt this as lives are on the line. Any local certified welder can do this and I will not begin to quote a price for them But I charge around $500 Labor plus material .

I have the ford removal keys, but the clips on the right side of the radio are damaged. Once removed, I could easily see the side clips and bend them inward with a flathead screwdriver. Then pulled on radio and it came. The faceplate can later be easily repaired by attaching with small screws. Its actually pretty easy.

The 289 / 260 / 302 / 5.0 V8 all have the same bolt pattern because they are the same basic block. The 1963 - 1964 260 V8 is used in Ford Mustangs, Fairlanes, Falcons, Mercury Comets, Meteors, basiclly the compact car line, all these cars will fit the 302. The 260 V8 is dropped after 1964 and the 289 becomes Fords small block V8. The 289 are in Fords from 1963 to 1968, that includes Mustangs to Galaxies and the trucks, in 1968 Ford replaces the 289 with the 302 which later becomes the 5.0. Ford also used the Y Block V8 back in 1954 to 1962, those cars also will fit the 302 and even the big old FE 390 engines without much modification, there are loads of conversion kits available for this swap.
If you have the C4 trans in the truck make sure you take that too and any engine wire harness, mounts, cross members, radiator, all electrical to that motor. I'm doing a cross-country drive with two people this summer and we're taking my friend's Ford Explorer (a 96). I know gas is going to be ridiculous, and I was hoping that there are a few ways to increase the fuel efficiency so we only go partially broke. :-)

Make sure your air filter is clean, spark plugs are fairly new, and change the oil (just good practice anyway). Use cruise control when safe to do so, and keep it under 70. Accelerate gradually. If it's hot, keep the windows closed and run the a/c, it's more efficient than having the extra wind resistance of the windows open. I have a '99 Explorer with the 4.0 V6 and average 21mpg with my daily drive of 25 miles each way to work, though there are very few stops and a 55mph limit on my route. That little engine will be more than happy with a single 2 inch exhaust. I think the smallest that Flowmaster makes a muffler for is 2 1/4. Ford e150 rough running after 1 hour or so in real hot weather, already changed fuel filter?
I have a 1993 ford e150 van with a 302 engine. It seems that after hour or so driving in real hot weather coming from work (traffic/temp 100 degrees) that van feels like it is going to stall, runs like it is running out of gas. Usually can stop for few minutes and starts right up and sometimes no problem and sometimes still feels like out of gas and runs rough, next day in morning starts right up and no problem driving 40 miles to work. Seems related to when it is real hot, temp gauge reads normal, could it be vapor lock or some sensor? Check engine came on once when was running rough but after got up to speed it went out. Any ideas, already changed fuel filter, seemed like that helped but like I said only happens on way home from work after hour of being in traffic do symptoms appear, otherwise runs good everday to from work

Older model fords are famous for vapor locking in the heat, no sure about the newer models. Sorry, but I would not by a ford.
I have been keeping a list of vehicles broken down on the side of the road for over 30 yrs and you guess it, ford has a commanding lead, 12 to 1 over chevy. I know that the foreign cars didn't really find their way to America till the last 15 yrs or so, but you hardly ever see one broken down either. Most of the vehicles in this area are ford and chevy; however, if you do some stats on it, ford till sux, badly.
You should be able to take it to a ford dealer and have them put it on a computer to find out exactly whats wrong with it for about $100. If its too old for the computer check, call the dealer and explain that it only does it when it's hot. Then make arrangement to drive it in after work while it's doing its thing or have the mechnic drive it while it hot outside. I would try to have it set up so that someone could hop in with you when its acting up.
For the stalling take a fuel line hose and split it. Run it over the fuel line to protect it form the heat of the engine.An old trick used to be wooden clothes pins on the fuel line. But todays cars are a little different. The best place for the fuel hose is along the line anywhere the engine cold generate a lot of heat. If the fuel line runs close to the head be sure to put it along that area.

My 2000 ford expedition won't start. The engine doesn't crank. I tried jump starting the car and it wouldn't work. I took the starter to get it tested and they said it worked fine. You mentioned a solenoid. What happens if you jump the solenoid, ie: power the solenoid directly from the battery. Your solenoid should have 2 big terminals and at least 1 small one. You can jump from the big terminal that the battery + cable is hooked to and the small terminal. If there's 2, then use the small terminal on the side the battery connects to.
Unless your Ford is radically different from my ol' '74 Pinto... If in doubt, get someone to look at the solenoid and ask them how to connect a bump switch.
The way things usually work is the key works a switch that will then route power to the solenoid. All a solenoid is is an electrically operated switch, or relay. If there's no power to the solenoid from the switch, you won't crank.
The switch should also power on your engine's computer and ignition and all that modern stuff. If the ECU doesn't get power, I doubt the engine would start, but it should crank.What is wrong with my 2000 ford expedition?

but i would not trust a starter test i went to have mine tested to and it still turn out that it was the starter, i would say its the starter get under the truck and have a hammer in your hand find the starter (usually on the passenger side) and hit the starter a few times while having somebody else try to start it if it turns its the starter and if not the starter could still be seized and you would need to replace it.What is wrong with my 2000 ford expedition?are the battery terminals clean and tight? how,s the battery? maybe it has a dead cell.

I own a 2004 Ford F250, 6.0 power-stroke diesel super duty and it is running with very little power, anyone know what might be the problem?Does anyone know anything about ford diesel trucks?Go to superdutydiesel.com for advice. They can tell you if you have any bad injectors and make sure all of your pressures are reading right. Premium gas has higher octane levels. Octane is basically a "power" level, but more is not necessarily better.
Too low octane, and your engine might "knock" (kind of a shudder"). Most run just fine on regular. If an engine requires a higher octane, you use the higher fuel. But if it doesn't require it, it's sort of a waste, because your engine can't take advantage of it.
I have one vehicle that has a custom engine and requires super premium (which I give it). The rest just require regular fuel, and to put in super would just be a waste of money, because it wouldn't make them drive or perform any better.

Both 4 cylinder engines I had would knock with cheap (regular) fuel. Always used mid grade or premium after calculating it would only cost me 75$ per year to use the higher octane fuel.
I only use regular grade in lawnmowers.

well if you got the gas at a gas station then its safe for your car unless its diesel fuel. regular, plus, and premium are all the same except for the octane rating which that only means the more expensive gas burns cleaner and cleans it out. I have a 98 Ford Ranger and i always put the plus in mine. I would have to say that if your car is before 96 then you can put the cheap stuff in because the fuel emissions doesn't matter in a 95 and earlier.
All it means is that your putting in a higher octane of gas. Keeping that in general premium gas is excellent for a car. That will give you better gas mileage as well. It burns cleaner to and will never harm your engine. If you have pings in your motor, normally premium makes your engine lifters run a bit more quiet as well.
If you've read How Car Engines Work, you know that almost all cars use four-stroke gasoline engines. One of the strokes is the compression stroke, where the engine compresses a cylinder-full of air and gas into a much smaller volume before igniting it with a spark plug. The amount of compression is called the compression ratio of the engine. A typical engine might have a compression ratio of 8-to-1. (See How Car Engines Work for details.)

I would have to say that if your car is before 96 then you can put the cheap stuff in because the fuel emissions doesn't matter in a 95 and earlier.

If you dont have this tab, then you'll need the chassis number of the vehicle, this could be located on a plate just on the inside of the windscreen on the top of the dashboard, or under the carpet stamped into the floor pan, at the side of the drivers seat. Unfortunately, the locks/ignition may have been changed at some point, so the chassis number may not do it, but Ford will have a record of the replacement keys supplied. Good luck. I am looking for a small truck that can pull my aircraft out of its hanger and on to the taxi way without having to start its engines while inside the hanger. from hanger door all the way to the runway, if need be from access door to parking lot.
a good used late model 4wd truck will cost between 11k-16k dollars a gently used kabota with a bucket 7k-10k hanging a comm radio in the heated/ air-conditioned cab will keep both the tower and pilot informed of operations

A V-8 from a Mustang will fit right in there with the right engine mounts. My husband recently bought a used '98 Ford Windstar that needs a new brake line, but we can't find any information on the diameter needed or the parts to replace them. Can anyone help us?Can someone help with 1998 Ford Windstar brake lines?When the old brake lines fails (gave up due to rust), the best thing to do is removed the old one and bring it to Auto Zone or any other Auto Parts store. Any hard to find fittings can be found through NAPA. (hard to find adapter,fittings). I have changed so many brake line in the past (lived here in Upstate New York) due to salt (winter), and bought all the new lines from Auto Zone,NAPA, Advance Auto Parts, Car Quest, etc. Depends what Auto parts store is in your area. Buying this parts from the dealer is very expensive. Junk Yard is ok but think about your down time, plus the parts you are getting. Most likely that they are rusted also... Note: Make sure that you spray WD40 before removing the old parts to avoid further damage on the good ones. Bring the old lines to any parts store and they can match the right length, and size (OD) for the line. Also, you can bend the new ones close enough to the original parts or bend it the way you want... Good luck...
Late entry note: Are you guys planning a vacation here soon? or try mail order? Another best bet is cut a little piece of that line (the end part if you could for best refferal on right fittings) measure the line for exact length and refer it to any Auto dealer abroad. I am very sure that any line works as long as the fitting (end) fits with the other end.
Btw. Lived there in Germany for 7 Years (79-85), Bremen, Bremerhaven, Fulda, Weisbaden and Meinz. and drove an American car (Buick Apollo). Had a transmission problem and was replaced there. I cannot recall where the parts came from but it was fixed and I brought my car back here, U.S. I believed that there's got to be a place where you can buy somewhere, because most of the brake lines are metric now a days. Both the answers above are accurate. There's a pretty good likelihood that the brake line you need is a hydraulic hose and not the metal line itself leading to the wheel. In either case, a Ford dealership would certainly carry the part.
If the vehicle is leaking brake fluid, I strongly suggest you get it repaired immediately. Until then, I would be reluctant to drive the vehicle very far, or drive with the risk of possibly having to use your brakes in a demanding manner. If the brake pedal pumps the brake fluid onto the floor, use a tow truck.
You have a windstar. With this vehicle, you must absolutely always make sure the transmission fluid is at its proper level. Your transmission is equipped with a servo that has a plastic piston which is known to crack. The replacement part is metal. Oh well, we're only human. Late entry note: Are you guys planning a vacation here soon? or try mail order? Another best bet is cut a little piece of that line (the end part if you could for best refferal on right fittings) measure the line for exact length and refer it to any Auto dealer abroad. I am very sure that any line works as long as the fitting (end) fits with the other end.
Btw. Lived there in Germany for 7 Years (79-85), Bremen, Bremerhaven, Fulda, Weisbaden and Meinz. and drove an American car (Buick Apollo). Had a transmission problem and was replaced there. I cannot recall where the parts came from but it was fixed and I brought my car back here, U.S. I believed that there's got to be a place where you can buy somewhere, because most of the brake lines are metric now a days. Both the answers above are accurate. There's a pretty good likelihood that the brake line you need is a hydraulic hose and not the metal line itself leading to the wheel. In either case, a Ford dealership would certainly carry the part.
If the vehicle is leaking brake fluid, I strongly suggest you get it repaired immediately. Until then, I would be reluctant to drive the vehicle very far, or drive with the risk of possibly having to use your brakes in a demanding manner. If the brake pedal pumps the brake fluid onto the floor, use a tow truck.
You have a windstar. With this vehicle, you must absolutely always make sure the transmission fluid is at its proper level. Your transmission is equipped with a servo that has a plastic piston which is known to crack. The replacement part is metal. Oh well, we're only human. Or if you have the hub assemblies, then you could also mic them to get your dimensions. You are going to have to have one or the other if you are making your own hubs to check for fit if you are going to do it right, so having the axles would be the best way to go about it.

I am considering buying a 2,000 Ford F350 4X4 V10 with 99,000 miles. I'd want the dependability of a new truck and would want to rebuild the engine. How much would it cost to rebuild the engine? A lot of the bearings and crap can't be purchased. In reality though that v-10 is one stout engine. My brother has a 2000 3/4 ton that he uses as a farm truck and to the best of my knowledge he has never had to do anything but change the oil in it. By comparison I had a 5.4 liter v-8 in a 1/2 ton and it was a piece of crap. That v-10 is a 5.4 v-8 with two extra cylinders. Back to the v-10, my brother is pushing around 200,000 miles. And being a farm truck it has had more than its share of heavy loads and abuse. Personally if it were me, I would get a 7.3 powerstroke. More pulling power and it would get better mileage than that v-10. Unloaded me and my brother took his truck for a road trip and it averaged 11 mpg on the highway. That is terrible. A 7.3 would average closer to 17 or 18 mpg. And if you are really wanting to rebuild something on that truck, rebuild the front suspension. Them pickups have terrible ball joints and steering components. You will go through a lot of tires.

If you have already purchased a NEW vehicle (very recently) %26amp; think that you 'qualified' for additional rebates and/or incentives that you did not receive, then you need to contact the dealer. Only a Ford dealer can submit the claim form to Ford. If they missed a rebate (ie College Grad Rebate) perhaps they didn't know that you qualified, and they would need to have additional documentation from you (in this case a copy of your diploma).
The dealer has no reason not to submit a rebate for you. It is not coming out of their pocket, but out of Ford's pocket.

You can't install a remote start on a manual car because the neutral safety switch is the clutch, which has to be pressed down for the car to start. In automatics, its just having it in "P" for Park.
I think Advance Auto has a Do It Yourself, or Install It Yourself rather, but its like $400. I'm unsure of the average costs but it cant be too cheap.
