Are there ways to make a Ford Explorer more fuel efficient?

I'm doing a cross-country drive with two people this summer and we're taking my friend's Ford Explorer (a 96). I know gas is going to be ridiculous, and I was hoping that there are a few ways to increase the fuel efficiency so we only go partially broke. :-)

Any suggestions?

Thanks! Are there ways to make a Ford Explorer more fuel efficient?Keep the tires inflated to the max pressure indicated on the tire. Make sure your air filter is clean, spark plugs are fairly new, and change the oil (just good practice anyway). Use cruise control when safe to do so, and keep it under 70. Accelerate gradually. If it's hot, keep the windows closed and run the a/c, it's more efficient than having the extra wind resistance of the windows open. I have a '99 Explorer with the 4.0 V6 and average 21mpg with my daily drive of 25 miles each way to work, though there are very few stops and a 55mph limit on my route. Good luck. Are there ways to make a Ford Explorer more fuel efficient?Excellent advice from the previous posts. Also, don't over load the Explorer and put a K%26amp;N air filter on it. Not sure how much they cost, but for my 07 F150 the filter was around $50 at Autozone. PLUS, that filter will last you forever, just clean it, let it dry and re-oil it; filter oil is cheap too. The oil should be stocked right next to the filters. Good luck and have fun out there. Are there ways to make a Ford Explorer more fuel efficient?your best bet is to have the oil changed and coolant flushed. also to save gas in asmall suv can be very easy. just drive below the speed limit when you can and avoid heavy city traffic. you should get about 30mpgAre there ways to make a Ford Explorer more fuel efficient?
Drive slower, try not to brake, turnoff the cruise control and AC when going up hills is your best bets. along with maximum pressures in tires as wrote on the sidewall.
