I need a car that is safe, has good gas mileage and is reliable. Between the 2004 Toyota Corolla and the 2004 Ford Forcus which one is an overall better car and which one should I buy? It generally lasts longer, depreciates less over time, requires less maintenance, and has better gas mileage.
Fords have gotten better over the years, but I think Toyota is still known to be supreme.

They are both good cars.
Anybody who says the Focus is bad because it's American doesn't know what they're talking about when it comes to cars.
Anybody who says that the Toyota isn't Japanese and the Ford isn't American doesn't know what they're talking about when it comes to economics.
I've recently been comparing new small cars (these were among them) for a friend, and have pretty much decided on either the Hyundai Elantra or Ford Focus. I'm looking at 2008 models, but the Focus hasn't been (completely) redesigned since then.
Bottom line:
They're both small cars. They will get good fuel economy.
The Focus will be much funner to drive while the Corolla will be extremely boring.
Both are known for the best highway rides in small cars.
The Focus will be much less expensive to buy. (Because many consumers are ignorant and assume that imports are automatically better)
Without side airbags, both are equally safe, but when each is equipped with side airbags, the Focus is safer.
Both get good reliability ratings, but what's more important is how well each was maintained by the previous owner.
My friend Brian's got a Corolla with 80,000 miles on it and I'm always having to fix something on it, those cars are very cheaply built. (I'm glad to own GM)
For your consideration, Consumer Reports has always ranked the Focus far above the Corolla.
I'm sorry I don't have any specific information, I just want to put my vote in for the Toyota Corolla. I have heard nothing but good about Toyota's. They are very reliable vehicles. I've never been a fan of Ford's, but I would buy a Toyota anyday (and plan to, soon!)

The '04 Focus has gotten a lot more reliable than when the Focus line started back in '00. The Corolla has always been king of cheap reliability though. While both cars are in the same class, getting decent mileage and reliability, the Corolla would still be better in those two, by a bit.
However, with a Corolla, it's not anywhere close to being as fun, and it's much slower than the Focus from what I remember when driving them. The Focus is a lot more sporty in terms of acceleration and handling, though, I might be wrong about acceleration, but it sure felt a lot faster way back when my brother had one.
So, if you enjoy spirited driving, get a Focus. If it's all about gas and reliability go with the Corolla.
No Question Toyota Corolla is the far Superior product. Don't even consider the focus, the only vehicle in that class competitive with the corolla is a Honda Civic. Both great choices.

Ford stands for fix or repair daily toyota, just be aware that if for any reason you have to repair it since it is foreign you'll be out of a couple extra bucks.... but if you do go with the toy you won't have to worry about repairs for a good while... their built very well..... dependent on the original owner as well look into who previously owned the toy.... carfax or something like that do that with any car you buy... especially ford or chrysler cars....
I recommend the toyota they have a better track record on fuel economy, nice car, toyotas are build to last, if you don't believe me ask any mechanic and if they tell you no then their just favoring the car they like but the realaty is that toyotas do last! they have boby kits and other features that make it look a lot better. Me i like mazda but i get a toyota just because there less problematic.

Ford cars are cheaply made and fall apart of the time. If you go with the Focus, your local car mechanic will start to know you by name after the number of times you'll end up visiting him because of problems w/ your car.
The cars are of equal class. The best car of the two is the one you find with the lowest miles and the best tender loving care given. Better care means that the previous driver had the means and time to give it that care. Often, you'll find these cars in retirement villages. If you're not sure who the previous owner was, check their programmed music stations. Generally speaking, music will give away the general class of driver.
Note on Branding: In the 60's, nothing was better than US cars. In the 70's, US cars were gas hogs, so Japanese cars looked good. But, the quality of Japanese cars was awful in the 70's. In the 80's, Japanese cars passed up US cars in qualtify (not trucks). In the 90's, they became even in quality.... but Japan already had the reputation so people perceived them as better. By the late 90s and into this century, outsourcing was so popular that it no longer matters where the car is ASSEMBLED, it's actually produced in a dozen countries or more. The Toyota isn't Japanese and the Ford isn't American. They are produced by the world market.

Corolla's are pretty un-reliable tho a mate had 2 both lasting less than a year before the engine blew, he now has a focus like mine.
Jap cars are only really reliable when there rarely used unless you get a civic V-tec...Honda always made good running cars.
