How do I check the transmission fluid on a 99 Ford Escort?

Im trying to check the automatic transmission fluid in my 99 ford escort but I dont know where to start.... Where to I check the fluid level? Also, how do I add more fluid if low? Is there a dipstick somewhere in the engine bay?How do I check the transmission fluid on a 99 Ford Escort?Well from my own ford cars, there is a dip-stick labeled TRANS FLUID, usually on toward the back of the engine bay, just infront of the firewall (RWD cars). Now if its a front wheel, which i think it is, then it should be on the left or right side of the engine bay, directly above the transmission. For the most part they seem to be on the passenger side (at least on my fords), but if not check the drivers side. And when adding the fluid, make sure you get the right fluid, and use a VERY clean funnel, let me emphasize on very. Seriously. Also, look at the color. If its very pink colored its good, but if its a "Dirty" pink/Dark pink, then you should have the transmission flushed and a new filter put on it. automatic transmission means there is a dipstick somewhere under the hood. to check automatic trans. fluid level do the following:

1-start engine and allow to operate until reaches normal operating temperature

2-apply parking brake

3-place transmission into the neutral position

4-locate dipstick and remove from dipstick tube (all this with the engine running)

5-wipe off dipstick and reinsert, pull back out and check the level indicated on dipstick

Remember the engine is running during all of this.

if you have a dip stick it should be around close to the transmission under the hood. it should say ( trans fluid ) on the stick handle. warm up your car good, park it on the level, raise the hood, pull out the stick, wipe it off, put it back in all the way, pull it back out again and read it. if the fluid is in the cross hairs on the stick then you in good shape. if it is on the add mark it should only take a pint of fluid to bring it to the full mark.
Normally, the transmission dipstick is on the opposite side of the engine from the engine dipstick. Start the engine and run the transmission through all the gear selections, r,n,d,1,2,3 and back to Neutral. Set the brake and pull the Transmission dipstick. clean it off, reinsert, wait a second and pull it out again. Check the level at this point, it's the only accurate way to check almost every automatic transmission.
