The engine service light has appeared on the dashboard of my Ford Cougar, but I know that my engine does not need a service, can anyone help me to turn this engine service light off?How do you clear the engine service light on a Ford Cougar? How do you know that the engine does not need service? If it is your "check engine soon" light, it does need to be looked at, preferably by the dealer or some mechanic who has the computer interface and equipment to look at the failure code.
If it is truly a service interval light, then whoever serviced the car should have reset the light. How do you clear the engine service light on a Ford Cougar?
I don't know why the public has not been informed about the check engine light on their vehicle. If you have a check engine light and or service engine soon light then you need to have it checked when this light is on. The light is telling you that an on-board computer has detected a input device or sensor or an output device is out of range. This light will stay on as long as it sees the out of range reading if it goes out the code is still stored and can be retrieved from the on-board computer. When your vehicle starts it actually runs on a pre-configured setting from the factory on a chip on the computer this is called running in the open looped mode after your thermostat has reached operating temp of 195 deg. as well as other input sensors being satisfied. The computer will go into the closed looped mode this means that air fuel mix and spark timing will be controlled by the ECM if any of the sensors fail while you are going down the road the vehicle will revert back to running on the open looped mode which is very poor gas mileage and power some have called it the limp-in mode because it allows the car to limp-in for help. Good Luck
Remember if the light is on your car is sick! How do you clear the engine service light on a Ford Cougar?I'm assuming you're meaning the service interval indicator and not the engine management warning light.
To reset the service interval indicator...
Switch the ignition to II
Hold down the "select" and "units" buttons (they're in a circular group to the left of the steering wheel below the air vents) for about 5 seconds.
Usually you just have to disconnect the negative battery wire and wait about 30 minutes. That will usually reset the computer.
Reconnected and drive for a 30 minutes or so. The engine may run a little rough because the computer needs to amass more data, but that should clear the light.

If you can get me the trouble code I can tell you EXACTLY whats wrong with it. I work for a ford dealer. Here is my email address. If you get the code send it to me. fat_shark_32@hotmail.com. Also you can the clear the code all you want but if the part is bad it will come back again and again.
You don't need a computer and if it has been serviced recently, the service indicator was not reset correctly.
If you are certain it has had a service, take it back to the person who serviced it and get them to do it.
I won't give away how to do it but if they serviced the vehicle, let them hold the resposibility. it can be done by holding a configuration of buttons but if the service was done by a resposible person, they would have reset it for you.
