we have the opportunity to get a free ford explorer, 10 years old/100,000 miles. do ford exlporers last a while, how are they on maintenence when they are this old? What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?A car will last as long as you will let it. If you change the oil on time and make sure easy things like the timing belt, filter, tires etc are all in good shape, then it should run just fine. Gas won't be as good as your Tercel, but that's expected obviously with more capabilities and a bigger engine.
Mine's a '99 with 67,000 miles (YES I know, hardly broken in!) and the only problems that it has ever needed to be taken to the shop for was a bad thermostat and a multifunction switch, which neither were cheap but when it comes to car repairs they are one of the cheaper repairs. What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?
We bought a used '99 Explorer 4 years ago for $10k. It now has about 108,000 mi on it and has developed an off and on rattle under the hood. Mechanic says that the timing chain or timing chain guides need to be replaced, a major job that only Ford can do. Says it will cost from $2-3000. (Bummer, because we just about had it paid off.) So, hopefully that isn't in your near future since yours is about the same age, etc. Not sure how prevalent that problem is at this point in this vehicle's life. Probably should ask around...What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?I'm a dispatcher for a company that transports railroad crews so our vehicles have mainly highway miles but I have some vehicles with 400,000 plus miles on them. These vehicles are very well maintained though. Mileage to me just says how much wear and tear has had a chance to get to the vehicle. I really don't like fords so I would say stay with the tercel. Better gas mileage plus you already know that vehicle. You know what is wrong or what it has problems with already. You could get this free explorer just to find out there's more wrong with it then it's worth. By the way I don't like toyotas either so this isn't my thoughts based on my hatred towards fords. What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?
You will have maintenance expenses on any type vehicle with that kind mileage and 10yrs. old. Four wheel drive vehicles will require a bit
more than an ordinary car. Your Toyota will be the least expensive to operate on a day to day basis. If the Explorer is free you don't have anything to lose. I have a 97 Explorer and its still going strong at 162,000 miles. What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?Properly cared for, almost any modern vehicle will easily go 250,000 miles.
Oil and filter are critical. Find out the specific brand and type of oil being used, and do NOT change from that type.
Keep the Toyota - much better fuel economy. What is the life expectancy of a ford explorer?
well, they dont call them exploders for nothing. for free who could complain. they can sometimes be a high maintanence vehicle, i know from experience. Not bashing the explorer, but i have seen toyotas like yours with 300k plus and still running strong.
