people always say the Ford 300 engine is a great engine. What did
Ford do differently on the 300 to make it so good? If the Ford 300 engine is so good why aren't all engines made like that? What makes the Ford 300 a great engine? What makes one engine better than another engine? It was also a good low torque engine (didn't need to rev it up for good power). The fuel injected version with high gear ratios (overdrive stick trans) was incredible! My brother had the E-150 van and got over 30 MPG. Manufacturers are very concerned with performance (HP) and the straight 6 is a thing of the past, being replaced by V-6, straight 5, etc. The Chevrolet Colorado pickup with the inline 5 developes over 240 HP, but I'm not sure about low end torque. What makes the Ford 300 a great engine? What makes one engine better than another engine? The 300 is a straight 6 which makes it naturally balanced from secondary vibrations (no crank dampener required).
It was built strong and had extra wide main bearings and crank webs. It was, after all, designed to be a truck motor. I had one in a 1963 pickup and it made it to over 300,000 miles. It had one valve job in that time.
