just bought this 99 ford explorer, and its seems to idle real fast when it is first started, it slows down a little after a minute or two. Is there a way that I can adjust it, or this how it is suppose to act?Why does my 99 ford explorer idle so fast when I first start it?Your vehicle will idle fast according to the temp of your engine. A cold engine idles fast to warm up quicker and when it gets to operating temp. the PCM will reduce the idle speed. Why does my 99 ford explorer idle so fast when I first start it?I have a 2004 Monte Carlo and a 97 Firebird, both v6s, and they both idle fast on initial cold start. The Monte starts at 1000 rpm then quickly drops down to closer to 600. The Firebird usually acts about the same, a little higher by the tach when she's running right (sometimes the RPMs stay up or fall all the way down to 0, or bounce all over the gauge with that particular car, that's what makes it exciting :) ) I've been told it's normal to idle on the high side to warm the car up and get the oil flowing. I don't think warm starts should idle high, though. Why does my 99 ford explorer idle so fast when I first start it?Without seeing it, I'd say it's normal. Also, it is NOT adjustable. Why does my 99 ford explorer idle so fast when I first start it?
It is normal for it to idle high and drop down to about 1K RPM once it is warm. Although, I would replace the air filter and clean the MAF sensor just to make sure it is cleaned.
