The advance the timing gets as the engine speeds up may make it run smoother.

Could be the plugs, the plug wires, the fuel air mixture, points . . . it's just too many things to try to run down. Someone you trust will have to see it and hear it to help you I'm afraid. I think you won't have a big expense if you take it in to an honest mechanic. Something is simply out of tune, but nothing major.
