I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Ford Escort, 198,000 miles on it, for $800, and get the engine rebuilt. I know a guy who's never had to replace a single part on his 1994 Escort GT, including the clutch, and he has 400K miles on it.

An engine rebuild (stock, I'm assuming, and all parts being replaced) would probably run about as much or a little more than the cost of the car. $800-1000.
